How come voting results are only updated once or twice during the evening?

Results are posted to our website as they are released from the Elections Office.  With the current system in place, ballots are run through a machine which tally's the votes.  The only way to view the current results from the system is to stop the ballot counting process and print out the results.  Typically the Elections Office will print results shortly after the polls close while they are waiting for ballots to arrive.  The initial results typically include Mail-in Ballots.  Additional updates are provided when there is a break, waiting for outlying ballots to arrive.

Everything is computerized, why don't we get results immediately?

The ballot counting system is completely separate from any of the County systems.  The only way to get information from the system is to stop the ballot counting process and print out reports.  Those reports are handed to a website programmer who enters the information onto our website.  There is no electronic interface between the two systems.

I wait and wait for new results, but don't know if more results are coming or everyone just went home.

We have made some changes this year.  We will update our website every 30 to 45 minutes beginning at 8pm.  These updates may not have new voting results, but will indicate what precincts have been counted, and where we are in the ballot counting process.  Each message will let you know whether or not you should be expecting any additional updates.
